Tanner the Duck say 'keep it clean,' the creek that is

Look out Dearborn County, the Tanners Creek Steering Committee has a new logo and mascot, "Tanner the Duck." Standing just over one and one half inches tall and two inches wide, "Tanner" is the newest addition to the Tanners Creek Watershed Project.

Created by Amber Jefferson, sophomore at South Dearborn High School, "Tanner" is the product of the Tanners Creek Watershed Project Logo Contest held for all high school students in Dearborn County. Just over 20 applicants fought for the first place prize of $75, "Tanner" was the clear winner.

"When a project has a symbol to focus on, it's easier for people to rally around and relate to that group" said Terry Stephenson, District Conversationist and judge for the logo contest.

"Tanner" will be used for various watershed publications, t-shirts, and even the focus of the 2002 River Sweep, when a rubber ducky race will be held in his honor. A second place prize of two (2) lift tickets to Perfect North Slopes was given to Danielle Fluegeman, senior at South Dearborn, and a third place prize of $25 was given to Madison Stuart, sophomore at South Dearborn.

Created through a joint effort by the Dearborn County SWCD, Hoosier RiverWatch volunteers, community members and assistance from local, state and federal agencies, the Tanners Creek Steering Committee is a volunteer, citizen's organization geared toward educating the community about water quality concerns, natural resource issues and what we can do, as community members, at home and work to help keep Tanners Creek clean. The committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Dearborn County Hospital at 7:00pm and is open to the public.
